RACERBACK BRA
A must-have bra for summer, worn under sleeveless tops and tanks, it features back straps that curve away from the shoulder blades. Many front-closure styles are racerback and most convertible bras can be adjusted that way. Particularly good for women with narrow or sloped shoulders. |
RAYON
What it is:Man-made fibers produced from certain cotton fibers or wood chips. The name is derived from the French meaning “ray of light” because of its reflective quality. The lingerie connection:The fabric that democratized lingerie. With a luxurious silky feel, this fiber was called artificial silk, or “art silk,” until 1927 when it was officially named rayon. Although Coco Chanel made a collection of gowns with this fabric in 1915, its widespread use was in less expensive versions of luxurious lingerie. It is shiny and lustrous, comfortable against the skin, absorbs dye well and drapes nicely. Disadvantages include poor wrinkle recovery and a tendency to shrink. |
REINFORCED TOE
The toe area on a stocking foot that is more densely woven to prevent toe-through. Wear the reinforced-toe style only with closed shoes; otherwise you’ll look like you wandered out of a nursing home. |
